Flying Report Sun 18 Oct 26
A bitter NW wind reminded us that winter is not far away although there was enough warmth in the sun for a late afternoon burst of thermic activity.
And it was a busy October Sunday with a good turnout from our young MEF students amongst whom we welcomed newcomers Seb and Ruk.
An important part of the MEF training programme includes all aspects of ground handling under the watchful eye of an instructor.
Our young solo pilots made the most of the good conditions to build on their experience. Junior member Douglas continues in the K21 whilst Lewis is enjoying getting to know the Concrete Swan (AKA R66!). Indeed, with a trip of 43mins in marginal conditions, Lewis claimed hog-of-the-day. Well done Lewis. And success breeds success with another three of our MEF students applying for RAFGSA Go-Solo funding.
An old RAF cadet and a young ex-RAF Cadet paired up for a couple of trips later in the day with Ruk first flying with Colin in our ASK 21 (R35)……..
……and then, as part of the MEF programme. Ruk took a flight with Colin in WG on the last trip of the day, sadly brought to an early end by rain.
Callum is picking up the aerobatics challenge and, following an introductory flight with Ian which, as can be imagined, involved some of that inverted stuff ……
……followed on with a general handling trip on which they caught some late afternoon thermals.
A super day’s flying at Shawbury with 24 launches and over 8 hours flying, with the rain bringing the day to an end.

After her success last month with the GB Team at the 2026 FAI World Advanced Glider Aerobatic Championships in France, we are delighted that Laura has won the British Aerobatics Points Trophy which recognises and reward pilot consistency, excellence, and participation across the entire competition season. Brilliant!
