HE’S BACK AND HE BROUGHT WAVE WITH HIM!!  Flying Report Sat 13 Apr 24

A fantastic day when it became evident that a Wave bar was set over the Wrekin.  It was to be enjoyed by our MEF students, visitors and club members alike.

But first, we are delighted to say that in response to our international appeal, a hoovering apparatus and qualified hoovering technician have been donated to the club.  Many thanks to all those others who answered the call (none)!

Those who turned up today were rubbing their eyes in disbelief – surely it couldn’t be the Ex-Dear Leader?  It was, and during the day Alan proceeded to put right all that had slipped in the short period that he had been away in the USA.  Once we got over the shock we got him out of the way, firstly with Ian in KE, then on a long Wave trip with a student and, finally, we sent off in the tug.  He just can’t stay away! 🤣🤣

We knew that Wave was forecast for all day but conditions to get into the Wave did not look good at the start of the day, indeed, with a low cloud base the first launches were restricted to 1,200ft.

At about 11:00 holes started to appear in the clag and first away to take advantage of the Wave conditions was Will in R66. Getting to over 6,000ft, Will was one of several to enjoy a trip of over an hour, flight duration only being restricted by the need to rotate instructor and tug duties.  Later, John Luke also got a great trip in R66 to a height of 5,800ft.

After thorough ground briefings, what a fantastic day for our MEF students to enjoy as they took trips in R22 and R35 to enjoy their first flights in these conditions in a Wave bar fixed along the axis Shrewsbury – Telford following the A5/M54.

Two visitors were also able to enjoy the day.  First away in KE with The Vicar as pilot and guide was Nicola, with family watching from the launch point.  Their triangular trip Shrewsbury – Telford – Newport also took in the family home.  We understand that the family may be back for another trip soon and we look forward to seeing you.

Amelia kept busy with a BI check flight with Ian and also took friend Gabbie for a couple of trips in R46.  On the later trip, they too took advantage of the Wave conditions.  Many thanks for mucking in Gabbie and hope you enjoyed the day.

Laura enjoyed her trip in Wave, a trip that ended somewhere other than Shawbury at a place called tinsel.additives.deputy.  Now that had the old lads on the airfield, a couple of whom are admittedly losing their marbles, scratching their heads as that was new one on them and they thought they knew Shropshire quite well!  Suffice to say that the rescue squad recovered her from the mud!

Elsewhere, whilst waiting on the launch point Jack insisted on having a new pic taken for his Tinder profile.  Good luck Jack!

Thanks to Sophie for organising a great day out that ended only as the wind picked up in strength.  23 Launches and over 11 hours of flying time.
