Flying Report 24 Aug 25 A Bostin’ Day Out
Smashing weather, hard ground, booming thermals – what could be any better? Well “Pin the Tail on the Donkey” could be! For 500 GLIDEX coupons, guess which donkey in the image below completed the DI on R22 without checking the front tyre pressure.😮
A slow start as no one knew who was bringing the tug in from Seighford. Eventually we prised Geoff M out of his pit so many thanks for saving the day Geoff. Thus, it was past 11:00 before the first glider got off the ground. In the interim there was (lemon drizzle) cake to consume courtesy of Mrs #vulcanbomber…..
……and a couple of trips in KE first with Norm and Toby who is just back from Kenya, and then a site check with Martin Pike, our guest tug pilot for the day.
First away in R35 was Ayden, son of club member Tony. Ayden came for just one trip with instructor Matthew and then, having enjoyed the experience, managed to get Dad to pay for another.
It was a hot day with some very strong thermals passing through and it wasn’t long before Will launched in R66 to attempt his 300km distance. Having only announced his intentions on Saturday, all the single seat jockeys were left muttering about what they were going to fly. Anyway, it didn’t take long for them to start betting on exactly how far Will would get on this day of booming thermals. Unkindly, one had him get as far as Bridgnorth, with the furthest distance, at 3-1 on, as Bromsgrove. Sadly, Will got to Worcester before running out of nature’s energy and Nick and Toby were dispatched for the retrieve. Good effort Will and better luck on your next attempt.
We welcomed Alan Marshall a Bannerdown RAFGSA club member. Alan lives nearby and thought that he drop in to see how RSGC compares with his own club. Alan took an hour’s trip with Simon and, in the late afternoon, another hour’s trip sitting in the back seat with Norm. We obviously did all right as Alan is coming back for more tomorrow. Good to see you Alan.
It was hot. Cloud base to 5,000ft, light winds and booming thermals all made for some enjoyable flying. Nick ventured loft in his ASW 20.
Geoff M took a launch, fired up the iron thermal in his Ventus 2CT and went off up the M6 to have a gander at Trentham Gardens (BTW if you are wondering what to do for a family day out, do visit.)
Elsewhere #vulcanbomber completed a trip of over an hour with Nigel, Rob fell out of the sky after 16 mins and the EO syndicate members all put in their usual moderate performance🤣
Thanks to all for your hard work on a hot and dusty airfield. Cracking day out with over 17 hours of flying and more to come tomorrow!
