Flying Report Sun 15 Jun 25

Given the forecast we kept a weather eye on the, err………..Weather, and sadly we had to scrub at 14:30 having waited an hour to see if the strong wind would abate.

Myndie Matthew was our Boss today and it was clear from the morning briefing that up on the Mynd the magnetic variation is quite different from down in the lowlands!

We were delighted to welcome two of our new MEF gliding scholarship students, Hos from Cosford and Callum from Shawbury and with our BIs needing to get the launches in, on their introductory flights Hos flew with Brad and Callum with The Vicar .

It was disappointing that we only completed 9 launches during the day of which 2 were in the TMGs.  Colin took Oliver for a trip in KE.  An enthusiast for all things flying, Oliver is waiting to join his local Air Cadet squadron at Cosford.  Glad you enjoyed the day Oliver and see you again soon.

Geoff M decided that he wasn’t going to hang around so launched in 243 to visit some of the local landmarks, returning some 2 hours later to help us pack up!😟

The old airfield at Condover - now a solar farm. RAF Condover was established as a satellite airfield under RAF Shawbury, also serving as an RLG for RAF Ternhill. It closed in 1945 and was sold by the MOD in 1960.

The old buildings (now an industrial estate) and former runway at Atcham. built for RAF Fighter Command, during WW2 its primary use was by the USAAF 8th Air Force. It closed in 1946 and was disposed of in 1958

Finally, welcome to new member Will.  Will, an Air Cadet with 2416 Newtown Squadron. had booked a taster flight at the end of which he joined the club as a junior member.  Will’s ambition is to be an RAF pilot, although he is aware of the huge competition to achieve that, so is doing all that he can to improve his chances in the selection process.  Delighted that you enjoyed your flight Will and we look forward to seeing you on the airfield.

Sadly, not everyone flew.  We are very sorry that we couldn’t fly Paul who has a BGA Discover Gliding Voucher, as we have cancelled his trip on other occasions due to bad weather; finger’s crossed for another day.
