Flying Report Sat 22 Aug 26. A first Solo!
Thanks to those who were able to support a busy RAF Shawbury Families Day on Friday. Our static exhibit, the club Astir R66, provided a popular photoshoot and selfie opportunity, and there were a number of expressions of interest in joining the club from amongst the RAF Shawbury based community.
On to Saturday and Alan reminded us that 22 August is annual “Be An Angel Day”. Established in 1993 the day is to encourage performing random, anonymous acts of kindness for others.

And it was Alan who got us off to an early start with MEF gliding bursary student Kyle who, as part his programme took an hour of consolidated learning in the TMG.
While they were away, we rigged the DuoDiscus R2 and took that out to the launch point – the first time in a while. R2 was put to good use in the day including some novel methods to climb in by #vulcanbomber.
We welcomed new member James (Mercedes Benz) Richardson, not to be confused with the other James (Suzuki) Richardson, Amelia’s Dad. James lives by Crash Gate 4 so decided to overcome his curiosity and find out what all this flying stuff was really all about.
The highlight of the day was a first solo for Lewis. Cosford based Lewis had taken advantage of the MEF Gliding Bursary programme followed by RAFGSA Go-Solo funding to achieve the required standard. A couple of morning trips with Geoff M ……
…followed by a High Key check flight in the afternoon was sufficient for Geoff, in ideal conditions, to send Lewis off for his first solo..

A stunning day over Shropshire that lived up to the RASP forecast. Booming thermals with cloud base c5,000ft.
Down on the ground WgCo Biggles and Will got stuck into some NAVex and field landing briefings before departing in WG. Will is hoping to gain his SPL before the start of his helo course at RAF Shawbury in 5 weeks time.
19 launches and 16 hours of flying time – a fantastic day out on which everyone enjoyed a decent soaring trip.

Winter Flying Programme. The Winter flying programme kicks in in September when we revert to a Sunday flying day schedule.
Where’s The Vicar? Absent from these pages for a long time, we expected The Vicar to make a return to the airfield today, but he was absent.
Loves his acronyms does The Vicar but when he referred to the BOG the other week, we thought he was talking about the toilets in Hangar 4. Turned out he was talking about the Book of Genesis!! Anyway, he’s away acting as the DOSSER or woteva with the Cosford Microlight Club!
